‘Agar’ – another attempt at translation

Written in 1896 by the then 31 year old Rudyard Kipling and first published in the “Brother Square Toes” chapter of Rewards and Fairies, his 1910 collection of short stories and poems, If is one of the most famous poems ever. And this is not only in its original language…. see the list beneath.

Here is “Agar”

Agar aap apna itminan barqaraar rakh sako jab sab aas pas
Sabr kho rahe hai aur aap par ilzaam laga rahe hai
Agar aap apne pe yaqeen karo jab sab shak kar rahe ho
Magar unke na-yaqeen ko bhi tawajju do
Agar aap intezar kar sakte hai aur us se na thake
Ya jhoot ka nishana ban ke khud us mein na padhe

Agar aap bardasht kar saken jo sach apne bola hai
Badmashon marorh kar ahmaqon ke liye jaal bane
Aur jhuk ke phir banao ghisse huye auzaaron se

Agar aapni sab jeeti raqm ka dhair bana kar
Aur ek hi baazi par hi sab laga do
Aur haar kar, phir se muhim ka aghaaz karo
Kisi ko aapni haar ke baare mein baataye bina
Agar apne dil, aur nus aur zor-e-maas
Ko apni khidmat mein rakho unke jaane ke baad
Aur aise hi jamaye rakho jab apne mein kuch na ho
Sirf ek jurrat ke jo unse kahe: “Thame raho!”

Agar bheed se baat karo aur apna ikhlaq mahfuz rako
Aapka hai yeh jahan aur sab kuch jo is mein hai
Aur – use ziadah – aap Aadmi honge, Barkhurdar!
